Ever wonder if there's more to the Universe than meets the eye? ǿմý (OC) Physics and Astronomy students and the community will have the opportunity to find out on October 5.
Every semester, OC’s Physics and Astronomy department takes students on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) — where radio waves become stories.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase a world-class astronomy research facility for the OC community,” said Ryan Ransom, Physics and Astronomy Professor. “More recently, we’ve been partnering with our astronomy colleagues at UBCO, bringing our students together for a joint tour.”
For nearly 20 years, these tours have given learners the chance to:
- Stand beside several active radio telescopes (including the iconic John A. Galt Telescope)
- Hear directly from scientists and engineers shaping the future of radio astronomy
- See how global discoveries are powered by research happening in our own backyard
The experience leaves a mark. “We’ve had students tell us that the tour inspired them to take more astronomy courses,” said Ryan. “It’ just another way we can connect the classroom to big-sky speaking and show our students that the universe isn’t something we just read about.”
